The GG Method For The Maestro

The Maestro, 8" x 6", Graphite

The guitarist sketch was developed a bit more this morning as I listened to my son and his dad talk over their morning coffee. He's a tough draw and this morning's session told me he would be an even tougher painting. There are so many strategic points that must match up to get his position right.  I initialed him and put my pencil down after getting far enough to realize he'd be a candidate for the Flemish method of construction, otherwise known as the Venetian method pending on who's doing the talking.  I think of  the grid/grisaille start as the GG method.  The grid would be good for getting the points and angles right. The Grisaille would be good for getting the values right. In the darkest area, there are a lot of strategic details with values that differ from one another by a degree or two.  The difference is important for the values describe the weight of his arm, the movement of his fingers on the down stroke strum--the stuff that makes the guitarist a maestro.

    1. While sketching and finding the strategic points, one can't help starting to think how to approach the subject with paint on the big screen.

  2. Thanks for visiting my blog, I do appreciate your comments. I apologize for my lack of reciprocation. I work full time, try to paint as much as possible and maintain a home as a single head of household. Takes most of my time. David

    1. I understand a full plate. Your work is too good for so few people to see it. Visiting other blogs, becoming a follower and leaving comments expands your audience. Then there's FB and FB groups, e.g. Realistic painters, etc. But I think your art is good enough to put out a website. I think it's very marketable.

    1. This is as far as this sketch will go. I'm ready to give him a go on canvas on a grander scale.
