All I Needed

When you sketch on an iPad or tablet, no subject has a clue they are the subject. All those glances their way are just you taking a break from your book or game. IPad sketching is much more discrete than art pad and pens. Given practice, finesse can be achieved. Right now, I'm at  the comic illustration stage, but the more adept I get changing tools, noting the power of the colors and the art of blending with the palette knife, the more I think some serious paintings can be produced.

Right now, it's great for catching the moment.  I did that first with this woman who also fidgeted--not because she knew I was drawing her, but because they had just arrived and was arranging her spot at the pool.  Then, when she just couldn't settle down with her book and strode off towards the beach, I finished her off from memory.

Good enough. I have a feeling I should have left all supplies at home this trip.  My creative cup is nearly depleted and needs a break.  The iPad is about all I feel like doing.

  1. Your self critique is spot on - comic illustration. Very well done, I might add.
Interesting hard lines and very much in tune with the younger audience.

I have a friend who achieves incredible work via the iPad (addicted to it) so I am looking forward to seeing what evolves.

    1. Nothing much. Forgetting about color and using a stylus and only black line adjusted to a size that suits, this iPad app, ArtRage, offers an opportunity to draw quickly without using up valuable drawing paper and without alerting anyone that they are your subject. I'll stick with the normal tools back home. Self critique is important. We should all know when our paintings fall short and be able to say why.

    1. You'll love it after you get the hang of it. ArtRage is available for free at the App Store, one of the icons that comes on the IPad. There are others too. I had three at one time, but narrowed it down to this one. It's good, not serious, fun while waiting at doctors appointments etc. I once wanted to be a cartoonist. Bought a lot of books on comedic writing and developed a character, but decided I wasn't all that funny and my character wasn't all that love able. Enjoy. It's a good escape from painting, yet not.

    1. I don't sketch on my computer, just the iPad, which I take with me to doctor appointments to fill the waiting time. Sketching is more fun than reading a book. My iPad is rarely out of my hands.

  4. Totally impressed, Linda!!! I'm a bit of a Luddite ... I don't even use a cellphone ...I tried one once: it kept ringing but as I never got to answer it properly, there was never ever anyone there ... so ... I threw it away!

    1. I have a blackberry, but I only use it to text kids or call Ellis in case of an emergency. Other than that it's turned off. The iPad I use for email, making notes, calendar, TV guide, sketching when I'm too lazy to get out the serious stuff ( like on this trip). But I think, I'm passé. It's time to get a smart phone that does it all. I like being familiar with how to operate the devices; life is going that way.

  5. Love your iPad sketches. Love them so much that I will now give iPad sketching a try! Wish me luck! I will first give ArtRage a go!
    Love all your work!
    Take care my friend!

    1. Good for you! There's another drawing app, I can download, but can't seem to save the pictures. I haven't figured it out yet. It's called Finngre Art Pro. What attracts me to this one is you can import a photo to trace. It comes in very faint and you draw over it. When I click save this image however, a dialogue box says it's preparing to save, then everything disappears to where, I have no idea! Most annoying. I tried it again yesterday, got the same results, so I deleted the app for the fifth time! Most annoying!
