ONLINE ART BUSINESS? RAM REQUIRED

OVER A WEEKEND OF SINGLE DIGIT TEMPERATURES

Plein air was out of the question. "Par la fenĂȘtre" was how I did this little sketch, House in the Woods, in between gathering RAM. The little painting was supposed to be a dash off, but I was abstracted by downsizing the picture file on my computer to increase open memory on my hard drive. "How to Market and Sell Your Art Online by Lee Rowley, the book I was supposed to take to Cancun, but decided it was better read at home near my computer, had gotten me started.

IF I should choose this form of marketing--which the author highly recommends,(what a shock given his title), one of the first things I need is a computer with lots of RAM. I had one, I thought. However, upon inspection, it appeared I did not. I had to clean up my C drive (of the multiple photographs of my works in progress, which I neglected to delete).

After downloading thousands of photographs,I had a smidgen of RAM left. Rather than rush out and buy a new computer (when I've sold absolutely nothing online), over the weekend, I've been eliminating duplications, the poorly taken, the what-the-hell-is-that photos--and the huge fool around video files I've stored. I've opened up some space on the hard drive, but no where near what Rowley would consider adequate for doing business online. 500 gigabytes would do it. I have 9.28 GB free of 99.4! I gained 2 point something GB over the weekend. I really should have concentrated more on the painting and less on this over-the-hill device!

  1. Thanks Steve, I will. I follow those who follow me. I'm running out of the house right now, but will take a real good look this PM. I look forward to it.

  2. Steve, I read your blog and I'm sorry to say I will not be following you. Your blog is not about art--or the business of art. It's about religion. And I have a rule never to talk religion (or politics) with anyone--those kinds of conversations always end up badly.

  4. Cleaning up the computer certainly is stressful Gabriella! And time consuming too. I just heard of something they call an external hard drive though that has 2 Terabytes which is equivalent to 1000 bytes to the forth power. That seems like enough RAM to me for an artist starting out in business in the last quarter of life. You've very welcome. I'll be by again.

  5. Google "artists helping artists", a podcast that has loads and loads of info re marketing art. RAM seems to be the least of it. Listen for example to the interview with Ric Nagualero which aired on January 5th.

  8. Hi Linda.
I love your story and your painting. Yes, I agree with you, less on the Rams and more on the painting. Painting lovely, story brilliant. All the best Linda.

  9. I know Dan. Rowley listed a whole bunch of computer and peripheral necessities to run an on line business--including of course a digital camera with 12 pixels or something. All is foreign and somewhat extraneous at this point. I do need another point of view. Thanks for your advice.

  10. Thanks Agnes. Between cleaning out my picture file and running up and down the stairs, I was getting a bit cross with it. It was taking up too much of my time for a Sunday afternoon quicky.

  11. Thanks Celeste. I had the blog this way originally and read someplace where white was better. A white ground is good in the contemporary galleries at the museum I agree, but I think I like the way colors become more brilliant on the gray ground in cyberspace.. Beats me about RAM--but maybe there's lots of record keeping in addition to photo files with online sales? I'll keep reading. --Your quick landscapes inspired me to try the same.

  12. I've always tried to keep my art life separate from my business life Victor. After Sunday, I know why. The art business online seems to involve a lot of busy work that I think has an adverse effect on the art. I think I could have done better with that little painting had I not been so involved with my RAM.
