The Rest of The Cancun Drawings

The worst and the best you saw in yesterday's post. Here are the rest. It turned out there were not nine drawings, but eleven. I'd say that's pretty good for a fourteen day holiday that included two travel days plus one day where we switched hotels, (we like variety in our lives). All could have been entered in the TWC. They were done quickly, with no preliminary drawing, just paint to paper in plein aire, spontaneously. The only way to paint in my opinion.

What I find interesting about the drawings is the emotional range. Some days calm, others not so. Probably had to do with the unstable weather conditions common in Cancun and other points South this time of year, (that's why there are such good air/hotel deals). It was mostly sunny, but it also rained, but never for long and never where you had to run indoors. It was always windy, but only one day and night of gale forces strong enough where I wondered if Mother Nature knew the hurricane season was past. The temps outside were the expected eighties. Inside, they were the expected bring-a-jacket, preferably one with some warmth. Hotels like to keep their uniformed service people cool while they work and their guests freezing their asses off in their tropical tanks and shorts. Go figure.

With our holiday a memory, we're off to the bakery for some delectable looking goodies for the ersatz Christmas party tomorrow night, Christmas Eve and the fourth night of Hanukkah. Have a Merry everybody. Soak in the warmth of the season and let it fill your hearts with joy and compassion. It's not too late to put a twenty in the kettle and spread the cheer.

  1. I LOVE THESE, LINDA! The abstractness and the detail... love the line of umbrellas....is this going to end up as a tryptych (sorta)?

  2. Thanks Chris. No plans for these. Just space in the file. The Hockneyesque one that I consider to be best of show does intrigue me enough that I might want to make a large painting of it with more detail, but only as a whim. Relax and enjoy the festive weekend.

  3. I think it is a lot of fun to see all of the other stuff you can do in addition to the luscious cake and tree paintings. I fall off the virtual earth for just a short while, and find that I am dozens of paintings behind. All good, whether destined for the drawer or not. I love the Hockneyesque one in the last post. Definitely channeling Hockney. And the last one in this group looks something like, well, my stuff! But I am toying seriously with the idea of digging into some thick paint too - getting kind of tired of the sketches.

  6. These are all great--the drawing of the hotel reminds us of your sculptor/architect background. I like the Hockneyesque one from yesterday, too. Happy Holidays.

  7. All great spontaneous paintings Linda. My favourite is the top one, but I really do love the painting with the old boy reading. Well done Linda. All the best.

  9. On the beach Dan, no serious drawing is allowed-- back in my studio, no fun drawings are allowed. I'm into the thick paint these days developing Lindaesque. Grab a jar! Thick paint's a gas!

  12. Fun drawings for fun times Hallie. Now back to figuring out what I want to do with all this stuff. To market, to market perhaps? The studio is getting cramped. Happy, healthy New year with a Bull market.

  13. Spontaneity is the spice of life Victor. I'd like a lot more of it and a lot less of regimentation, but alas, skilled is disciplined and you can throw around the paint all you want till you have to zero in and pull the mess all together into a comprehensive whole. Listen to this philosopher! A Happy, healthy New Year to you and yours.
