One to A Customer

These sketches were done quickly with no pre-drawing whatsoever. I worked out the relationships, the proportions, the strategic points, lines and planes, on the spot and corrected as I went.

I'm not quite done with the last "mice" sketch. I still need an hour to examine the white connections--study the lighting in the lower third portion and embellish the cupcakes with sprinkles and the chocolate canoli with chocolate drizzle. You can't have too much chocolate.

Reviewing them here, these painted sketches are intense, one of life's truths. They are NOT less is more. They are more is too much--and if you've ever eaten too many sweets you know what I mean. You soar with a sugar high and then crash with a headache. I look at pastries at the bakery and I see beyond their mouthwatering colors. They are gorgeous--photogenic--enticing, but indulge, and they turn nasty with fatty deposits, high cholesterol, high triglycerides and rotted teeth. They are poison.

In life, we humans tend to over do. We over work to over play to over buy--all striving for the sweet life, which overdone makes us sick and sicker still when the devil food cake demands his due. If these sweet sketches appear overdone to you, they are. They are metaphors. Only one to a customer.

  3. I have to say, I've popped into your blog repeatedly, but I've been out and about and commenting on the phone is problematical. So I've seen your past few posts and the wonderful sketches! Now - how you can call these sketches too is beyond me - these are paintings - juicy, fattening, delicious, rich paintings. Very beautiful!

  5. yes...they look sugar-y, but that is their sunny charm. I refuse to look at these paintings as "too much"--! They are super pretty!

  7. Hi Linda.
Yes I agree with Dan above 100%. They are definitely paintings, and beautiful ones at that. Please don`t call them sketches Linda. You are a master colourist. All the best.
    Vic.

  8. Dan,I call these sketches because if I think of them as being anything more important than that, I get too serious, too judgmental and too uptight--all attitudes that tend to spoil my fun. Thank you for your kind words.

  9. Pretty Celeste? OMG. I hate "pretty," but pretty they are. That's what made me photograph them as soon as I saw them. Color is what made me paint them--Odd for someone who dresses in drab day to day.

  10. Careful Robert. There's some cadmium and dioxinine in there.

  11. It was the color that attracted me to this subject Victor. But they have to remain sketches in my head. Call them paintings and I'll freeze up. My art has to remain a fun thing to do--nothing too serious.
