But I find the woods behind my house more fascinating--the tree forms interacting with one another--the linear aspects, the density, the gnarled forms, the wood. I am not a landscape artist though, I am a sculptor who paints. On a two dimensional surface, color defines the space: Darks close it in; lights open it up. Pure colors come forward; diluted colors fade back. Summer 2009 is a tense painting--but there's a promising open space beyond all that darkness. In Wildfire, the darkness is burning away and the clearing beyond is more accessible,but not totally clear of obstacles. That's life. There will always be obstacles to get around or climb over. Expressionism seems to be my genre.

Thank you Victor. I don't know how well Wildfire will come out, but I do know I'm having a fine time painting it. It's a nice size canvas, 36"x36", and I'm using a small brush so it might take a bit of time. All the best to you too during this lovely holiday season--in case I forget to add that to my comments.

ReplyDeleteIt's a fun painting,demanding with regards to a multitude of strokes and achieving some degree of elegance for the finish surface,but fun. If I was sculpting it, it would be made of woven twigs and perhaps shreds of gauze--a multi-plane weaving--maybe some wire? Having just two dimensions to work with,color comes into play. --Hallie, I've been meaning to tell you for quite some time: I really love your self portrait sculpture. I relate to your pose.
