Morris, Dick, Max, Me And Some Lady From The Beach

Instead of tackling Morris' shirt or the guitar this week, I decided to go into the light to better judge the midtones.  Going after the lights meant tackling his head, not an easy thing given the vague reference in which half his face is lost in shadow and the other side is totally washed out.  Careful interpretation slowed down the  traditionally slow painting process even more, but there were benefits: lots of workout breaks, a pound lost and a bit more of Morris realized.

A Loving Wife, A Pleasant View, graphite, 6" x  8".

A Tough Time With Dick,  graphite, 6" x 8"

A little more Dick, a little more satisfied.

A Man and His Dog, graphite, 6" x 8" (Another view of Morris explored but not conquered).

.A poor study of Max told me the week might not be going all that well.

Max, The Boy With The Crooked Grin,  graphite, 6" x 8"

New Sketch Book, New Self Portrait to kick it off, graphite, 6" x 8"

  1. From the results, it was a very good move to go after the lights first. Morris is coming along beautifully. I love the self-portrait and the sketch of Morris and his dog, too.

    1. I thought the new photo his wife published on FB might give me more information about the right side of his face, but when I blew up the image it was as vague as the reference I'm using for this painting. I called the drawing Man And His Dog. Thanks Kathryn.

    2. Well, the weather has been crazy ( as u well know).. also, I bought a Mac and love it.. no issues at all... my other laptop is doing a slow death and I've heard nothing but complaints about Windows 10... I don't have to jump thru hoops with a Mac like I did w/Windows...if u ever think of getting one do so thru Apple site... if u are curious as to why email me.

    3. I recently downloaded Window 10 on my year old Dell. I am having no problems, but then I don't do much on my PC. Photos are my major interest, with normal everyday things after that. Besides, we are a Microsoft family.

  3. Hi L.W! Oh my Gosh....what a good idea to put a red "x" through a result you're not happy with...I might just steal THAT! lol! Many times the things you aren't crazy about look great to me, though. You are such a gifted artist! I love your Morris painting and you are the self portrait Qween! Keep them coming. :)

    1. Who is your most accessible model, available any time, free of charge? In my house, it's me; my husband balks. Thanks. The red X is an obvious way to point out I wasn't pleased and that's why I did Max again and put in a background on Dick. Actually Dick revised should be xed and done again in contour. Some other time. I am busy getting back into my exercise routine as well as drawing regularly. Morris just gets an hour session per day, which, now that I am down to the details, isn't long enough, but it is all the time I care to scumble, mix, scumble, wash brushes. Thanks for visiting.
