Not Only is Winter Coming, But It Came Before

Not only is Winter coming, but I discovered in my archives that it came before and I painted it each year. The season doesn't make me gloomy, it frustrates me that I never took up a winter sport other than painting. I'm hoping this Winter will be different.  I've always had cross country skiing on my list of things to do.  This could be the year.  Then maybe some of my paintings would have some people in them?  I must confess though, that I do like the harsh look of winter.

The Paintings From Winters Past:

Winter Lake, 2010, Acrylic on Gallery Stretched Canvas, 36" x 60"

Winter White, 2012, Oil on Canvas Board, 9" x 11"

Winter Lake #2, 2012, Acrylic on Gallery Stretched Canvas, 36" x 36"

January, 2013, Digital Finger Painting, ArtRage App for iPad

Winter 2012,  (Part Four of Four Seasons Unit Painting), Acrylic on Gallery Stretched Canvas, 20" x20"

Spring Thaw, 2013, Acrylic on Gallery Stretched Canvas, 20" x 20"

A Tree Fell, 2013, Acrylic on Gallery Stretched Canvas, 20" x 20"

While I don't particularly like playing in the snow yet, I seem to like to paint  it particularly in wooded areas. There's just something titilating about those barenecked trees and all those lines.  :-))

    1. the problem with it is it's too damn cold. But fashion boots and fall and winter fashions do help get you through it. I jest, but only a little. I do like a noticeable change of season. The change makes each special in its own way. As much as we do talk about moving to the warm, we have yet to decide where. Most of the places we've considered have summers that are too hot and too humid and too rainy. So we stay where there's diversification and travel when we need a splash of sunshine and a spot of sea. We must like where we are. And from the number of paintings and drawings of winter that I saw in my files yesterday, I would say I like winter no matter how much I bitch during a blizzard.

  2. I like the idea that you paint Winter colors. So many find it only bleak.

    1. I find it plenty bleak some days, others, there's a quiet peacefulness, a holiness about it that's very cozy and reassuring. When my boys were my boys, I used to get as excited as they did on snow days off from school. After tobogganing, we'd read the Oz books, always one more chapter, drink hot chocolate overloaded with miniature marshmallows and talk about the moral issues presented in the Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoons. (I'll bet you didn't know there were some).Very close, sharing times happened then. Fond memories of home and hearth.

  3. I hope you're feeling better and are busy creating this type of abstract landscaping, I love them, and this is the season to capture all those colors

    1. Thanks Roger, I am. What I like about landscapes is they have colors all mixed up. They are lively especially when painted as if passing through at a fast pace in a car. I'm so glad to see you back. I missed your daily surprises.

  4. You have the basis of a wonderful thematic exhibition here. Now there's a project to think about.

    1. I do don't I? And there were more. It was very surprising to see how many times I painted winter for someone who shudders at the first snow fall. On the other hand, winter is the best time to paint. Once the weather turns nice, I like to be out in it on my bike or swimming in the lake.

    1. It does seem that I do have a style afterall--when it comes to wooded scenes. I used to think I didn't. A while back, I noticed that my style was influenced by my subject--certain subjects called for this treatment, others called for that. It bothered me alot since the change made my work inconsistant and inconsistency in the art market is unacceptable. Some master painter said don't worry about style, everybody has one. He never met me. I am a cameleon.

    1. Thanks Hilda. But don't you think it should have a wreath or something? --Maybe an elf peeking out of the brush? :-))
