It's Raining. It's Pouring

Who gives a shite? Not me. Stormy and turbulent, the sea is still the most beautiful I've ever seen. The grays are gorgeous. I might be the only one who thinks so. Most vacationers prefer basking in the sun, rather than sitting on a balcony, watching the weather, which was awesome in its magnificence. It doesn't bother me that it's not a pool afternoon. I'm content. There were potato chips at lunch. And I ran into the couple from Fort Worth, Texas who were here last year and the year before that and are here again celebrating their fifty seventh anniversary. We also met Rick and Cheryl from Grand Rapids and Mike and Linda from Chicago.

Our social life for the next few days will be as enjoyable as it was at the JW. I was a bit worried. The Ritz is often judged to be too expensive and too stuffy. It isn't. Of the two hotels, it is the most reasonable this time of year and anything you want is their pleasure. My pleasure this rainy afternoon was my paints and the lovely floral arrangement in our room, I couldn't resist tackling it with both markers and watercolor as I sat on the balcony marveling Mother Nature.

  1. ooooo I agree, it is a perfect time to paint flowers when it is raining...and oh my--what a view! I can't agree more, that the rain and interesting weather is just as wonderful (if not more so) than the perfect sunshine. :)
    Nice sketch!

    1. And the arrangement was lovely. I am not however enjoying opaque watercolors. On 140 lb. paper, they are dull, definitely not clear enough. I'm going back to the cheap paint pads they sell at the market.

  2. Those flowers are lovely, and it seem that you paint and draw whenever you have a free moment.

    1. Thanks Roger. I had my choice of subjects-- a bowl of fruit or the flowers. Yesterday, the flowers; today, the fruit. The sketches don't take all that long, about a half hour and then some definition time, so why not work in a session to keep eye and hand coordinated? It's paint or read a book. Reading on the iPad isn't for me. In fact, doing so made me decide I like book books with pages that turn when I say.

    1. I'm glad. Some might think I'm not taking advantage of my time out, but they're wrong. I don't count painting and posting as work--and actually, I love having discovered how to post from the iPad.

  5. Linda!
I love the way you painted the flowers! This wonderful piece is one of the best ways watercolor should be used! Very successful!
You are not alone in loving stormy skies and wild turbulent oceans! I absolutely love the ocean at its wildest and stormiest! I dislike very much when I weather forecaster describes a beautiful stormy day as gloomy! I think the weather is spectacular! Just like this watercolor! Bravo to you and bravo to stormy ocean paintings!

    1. Stormy seas are magnificent indeed. Trouble is only artists might think so. The rest of the crowd came here for a kiss from the sun.

    1. Yes it is. There are a lot of Europeans here. Cancun is ten hours from London, I was told. Mexico seems to be the closest Europeans can get to warm weather this time of year. Thanks. It was fun using my markers in combination with the watercolors. Opaque watercolors on the paper I brought don't give you as clear a color as you would like.

  12. That's the way to do it, there's always something to get onto paper. Heavy seas also make great subjects. I agree with your comment about opaque watercolour. One of the joys of watercolour is the lovely feeling of light through the transparent colours.
