Moving On

Better likeness, but time to abandon  this rough sketch.

An accurate likeness requires a lot more measuring and more time.  As sketches go, it's okay. Kissinger is gone and the real guy is starting to come through.  Nevertheless, it's time to move on. The clock is ticking on my Sun Torch drawing sessions.

In the New York Times this morning, I read an astounding article on Peter Lik, a very talented photographer and ever more talented business man.  His print of Phantom, belowhis latest new photograph, just sold for 6.5 million, more than any other photograph ever.   This is a guy who knows how to make his art pay and wasn't afraid to turn his back on traditional art marketing traditions.  Read Peter Lik's Recipe for Success: Sell Prints. Print Money.  ; it will amaze you--and give you plenty to think about--especially if you've decided upon art as a profession and want to make a comfortable living.

Mr. Lik says “Phantom” is the most expensive photograph ever sold, at $6.5 million, to an anonymous buyer.Credit Peter Lik

  1. Reaches for camera ... then remembers he is the world's worst photographer and would make more money by simply selling the camera :)

Henry K was certainly a great man

    1. Yes, he was quite a statesman. We could use him now. But who you see here is more my son than Henry. Should I carry this sketch to canvas, the grid is a must. His hands were caught by my camera in motion. They look in motion here, but his eyes still aren't his eyes.

This Lik has an excellent marketing technique that's very original. It sure beats selling online. His method however does feed the opinion that photography is not an art. Should I ever dine on his yacht, I'm going to tell, him.

    2. Yes put him to canvas, you'll enjoy it, and so will I.

The only American 'statesman' I had anything to do with was Andrew Young, US Ambassador to the UN in the 1970s. When he was first appointed he joined the new British Foreign Secretary, and we flew them all around Africa. Almost coming to grief when our clearance into Marxist Angola 'wobbled' ... the sound of missiles locking onto us was chilling.

    3. That's a name from the past. A fine man if memory serves. Did't Pat tell you to stay away from missiles--unfortunately, that's impossible these days and not such a funny remark.

  2. Henry K. was not only smart, he cared about our nation. Yes, we could use him now. "Phantom" is scary good!

    1. This guy not only can take shot, but he's a Photoshop genius. I should think it's owner thinks so too. He paid a pretty penny. This photograph reminds me of Judy Chicago's work--female genitalia. 😄

      Kissinger was a genius too.

    1. I did manage to get rid of Henry and get the guy I was after. Now I'll have to do Henry of course. Phenomenal amount! I'd love to know the whole story of how the multiple galleries came about and the public relations campaign. He's from Austrailia who stopped in Maui on his way home from a failed adventure when he had this idea. He liked Maui and decided to stay. It all started there.
