A Closer Look

A Girl, But Not My Girl, graphite, 6" x 8", Thirty Minute Daily Drawing Series

Sometimes you need more than thirty minutes.  This morning was one of those times.  So I took an extra ten on my closer look at the child in Can I Be Excused and still  got no cigar--other than her mouth.  Keep on truckin'.

I have no intention of adding color to my morning drawing sessions; I gave colored pencils up in 2009.  I have added to  my range of leads: from using only a G 314, then moving to a  Berol HB, I've expanded to a 3H, HB, 3B and 6B.
A 3H is great for keeping things light till all points are in place, but then at least one of the Bs is necessary. I'd rather change the pencil than increase the pressure and dent the paper.

  1. Like the way we can see some of your construction lines. They give a clue to how you build your portraits. Informative and the old picture shows us how you've had the technique down for some time.

    1. That's how I finally got that I was a portrait artist. Who knew way back when art educations centered on graphics or design if you had a career in the arts in mind? I really did know how to draw early on. I thought everybody could. Dumb huh?

  2. Lovely portraits! I see, you're really into drawing faces and personnages lately. Quite a challenge! A demanding one, I might add. Good luck with your latest one.

    1. At this age, I have no idea why I would zero in on portraits EXCEPT I like accuracy, strategic points and how the relationships make each of us physically unique. Portraiture is fascinating. One line or dash of paint poorly placed jeopardizes getting a good likeness. It's a challenge.
