Pinch Me

Pinch Me I'm Cute, graphite, 6x8, 30minute daily drawing session # 37
Who would put their kid in such a tee shirt! Sure, she's adorable, but to invite the world to pinch her? Better to squeeze her chubby legs and  blow raspberries on her tummy till she shrieks with laughter, kicks you in the belly and pulls your face down by your hair to get you to do it again. She certainly won my heart enough to spend another bit of time this morning examining her arms, hands, the position of the swim ring she's hugging close.  All through the session I kept thinking CHARCOAL, STUDIO, FULL FIGURE STUDY.  This baby is pushing me back through those doors.

I did go into the studio yesterday, not to work, but to get some chicken and ground beef from the freezer--the very same freezer where I keep my palette overnight when a painting session is interrupted and the palette is fresh. The Venetian greeted me.  It's amazingly good.  Then I glanced up at the drying ledge and saw my Stilettos. It was good too.  The two paintings were an interesting contrast. The loosely done stilettos, done in a few short sessions, made me smile..  The carefully planned Venetian, done over weeks of many long sessions, made me grimace. Yet, the two very different approaches to painting attract....Must I  choose where and how to roost?

Stilettos, oil, 12 x 8, Painting from Life series, made me smile.

The Venetian (Self Portrait),  oil, 36 x 24.  Self Portrait Series
Made me grimace.

  1. Painting has many aspects, and all interesting for me .
Painting with different methods is' how to have multiple lives, while I'm living one ... It is so interesting explore different worlds to take whenever their conclusions based on true experience.
I love the beauty of different aspects of your painting.

    1. Yes! Me too. But consistency seems to be a sign of "gelling," whatever the hell that is? I just know that different subjects call for different approaches and I respond accordingly. I like your thirty minute drawings. They look like you were having fun.

  2. I agree with Rita.
You have an interesting and wide reaching mind so it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out your art will be that way too.
Of the two paintings...do I have a favorite...? Depends on the day. Both are great.

    1. Obviously, I am not a rocket scientist. I missed that observation. --that's how I paint: it depends on the day. That's not a great thing in the marketplace,( though very pleasant in the studio), Marine's work, yours and Roger Akesson's, plus many others, are all immediately recognizable without looking at the signatures. I think that's great! I admire that consistency. I'd like some of that, but at the same time, love to mix it up!

    1. I have no other choice Danielle. That's me. Inconsistent. Some days, like this one, it's annoying. Happy New Year!

  4. The ambivalence of the artist with her work!! It's a funny old world - I suppose the day we get the painting exactly right, is the day we give up!

    1. Shut up John! Can't you see I'm going through a phase of something or other? I found it difficult to paint by the sea. I haven't stepped into my studio since I returned. The Venetian (they're going to make a movie with that title) got to me big time--but not enough to turn off my drive to draw. To top it off, I'm reading Marine's book that advocates little, daily paintings for profit when profit was never my driving force. Do love your drama! Do love mine. Happy New Year friend. Have you and Pat thought about going to Cancun? You should come next December. Lots of folks from the UK and Sweden gather at the JW Marriott. They tell me Cancun is the closest place to find sun and warmth. Love to meet on that beach.
