    1. I'm taking watercolors, a block, an exacto knife and my camera. I'm planning on painting wet into wet, while wet. I'm also planning to photograph the crowd and sketch them. Charcoal or markers or both? I take more supplies than clothes. And if it rains? I'll paint that too by the sea turned that awesome Payne's gray with touches of Alzarin and deep nearly black ultramarine.

    1. Yes! I love the sea--to paint, to slash along in the surf, not to sail--but I needed a little red. :-))

  4. What a fun and lively painting. Smacks of salt air, sunshine and relaxing on the beach watching the boats go by.
Where do you go to? The same place every winter?

    1. Yes. Cancun, Quintanaroo Mexico. For the last twenty plus years. We missed one year due to Hurricane Wilma which devastated the area. Jamaica did not win our hearts. We like two hotels for different reasons. So we split our stay between them. I'm looking forward to doing watercolors with no expectations of greatness and taking a lot of reference photos of folks on the beach as well as every sunrise. I take more art supplies and beach toys than I do clothes. Ellis sits and reads the New York Times and plays Sudoku.

Then, it's back to reality--snow and fires on the hearth, finishing my reading of Van Gogh's Letters to Theo, Van Gogh at Work, Swatland's Companion to Schmid's Alla Prima and carrying on with the two monochromes I've been laboring over. This holiday will refill my cup. I was overwhelmed by the method and it's requirement for great patience--not to mention the added discomfort of dragging all my stuff to a foreign place to paint where they decided it was a good time to resurface their parking lot! Having been in the design/build business for decades, that was very poor planning and a bummer to students who paid good money for the classes. As I told Todd yesterday, the class was a good fit, but the circumstances threw this reclusive painter. I thought perhaps a monthly get together for a critique. He liked the idea. We'll see how much. He's a sweet and very knowledgeable guy.

The Venetian method is good for portraiture as I suspected it would be. Portraiture is an involved genre requiring several abilities. I think aspiring portrait artists need training in working with people for the purpose of doing life studies, formal photography and Photoshop techniques, as well as the painting techniques, the study of color/value and a course in running a business--all artists need that one. I started very late in life--too late, but I sure am enjoying the pursuit. I wish I was young enough (fifty something) to really go after it.

Funny how one question can get my mind going way past the simple answer. But our holiday is just time off from painting to clear my head for what I plan to do next. I was a designer who, obviously is still designing plans.

The iPad is an interesting sketching tool. It takes some shopping around for an app that will do what you want it too and then there's a learning curve. I like it. A new gal I'm following made me rethink it as a viable tool. ReclinerArt is her website. She's very good. Take a look. All this from one little question. My keyboard ran away with me again!

    1. I think the iPad is great for fast, fun sketching. I got a stylus and downloaded ArtRage, an app available at the App Store. it has a short learning curve, but after that, great potential. You're still sketching. You're working with color. All good practices. Is it art? No. The edges can't be dealt with. Finesse and elegance are missing. These are graphic drawings. Thanks Helene. Do take a look at www.reclinerart.com. The gal is a real iPad pro.
