Depp or Sheen?

Depp or Sheen?  This portrait in progress is hovering in between these two actors.
Standing way back as I am when examining this study's computer translation, I would say Sheen at the moment. My shadows aren't dark enough as yet so Depp's  facial muscles aren't Depp enough. His mouth needs adjustment too. BUT I AM GETTING DIRECT PAINTING!  And that's what I'm after. Every stroke is getting looser. Color values are being mixed more accurately on the palette, instead of trial and error on the canvas, as I did in the past.  I'm using colors spacially.  However, I am still painting back and forth between darks, lights and mid tones--risky business in direct painting. Colors can get muddy.  It's hard to shake off original teachings of dark to light. It's hard to just think additive instead of vacillating between the additive and subtractive method of charcoal and pencil drawing.

  1. There is no question he is currently a Sheen, but please make him a Depp. As an actor, Depp is artistic talent. Sheen is like throwing paint on a wall.

  2. He is looking good...even if he is kind of a Depp/Sheen combination. I see a lot of fluidity in the strokes...excellent!

    1. Thanks. Yesterday however I discovered my favorite filberts should be flats and a bit raggedy, my strokes are too solid. More dry rush action please! Schmid's discussion on values has kept me squinting on Depp searching out the relationships so much, my frown lines are coming back. I haven't had frown lines since I was twelve and my mom realized I needed glasses. I love this guy. I wish he had come to my attention sooner.
