Beach Umbrellas When Rain Umbrellas Were in Order

I do like the grays and the movement in the cloud system even though the sky promised a rainy day.

I like the steady rhythm of repetition, of concave disks in space.

My heart wasn't in this sketch, but it has possibilities--some splashes of white on the suggestions of lounge chairs plus a vertical swipe...

The  humidity took my breath away when I opened the doors to the balcony and saw this sunrise, one I have never seen before in this resort town in the twenty years we've been coming.  My iPad told me it was 100%. When we went out to the pool, my glasses steamed over. There wasn't a wisp of a breeze. I tried to get into sketching, but had no heart. I photographed what I would have drawn if I had verve. My head was full. I was lightheaded. Ellis couldn't concentrate on the New York Times. We laid on our chairs depleted.  We shook ourselves up by taking a swim.  It worked magic. It cleared my head. Ellis, on the other hand, got water in his ear he couldn't get rid of no matter how much he hopped up and down on one leg.

Then the rains came and Sunday in Cancun became just like a winter Sunday in Michigan. An afternoon of movies and online shopping. First was Armageddon with Bruce Willis, very appropriate for the day.  I watched and looked for pull on winter boots. Ellis napped. Then I Am Legend came on, but it was time to pull ourselves together and go to dinner. I went reluctantly.  I love Will Smith.

  1. I envy you! You seem to have a great time and sound relaxed. I could use some time off, a little vacation. How long are you staying for, got the feeling that you have been there for a while now?

    1. I am in spite of the unusually rainy weather. I'm glad it's warm rain and not icy snow, which I hear is at my house. We have been here two weeks with four more days to go. It's the longest trip we've had here. AND I DON't think it's going to be long enough when I'm on that plane home. We hear from the Europeans we've met that Cancun is the closet warm weather vacation spot. You should consider coming next year. The best hotel packages are December 1st through the 20th. And in all years past, the weather has been just what you want it to be.

    1. We have no other choice, but to make the best of it. I'm not a sun worshiper so the absence of sun doesn't bother me. The rain does prohibit drawing outside with watercolors. This little sketch was run off quickly with markers. I threw them into my satchel as a second thought, but It's the sea that holds my attention. The changing colors. The rough surf. The impressive waves and on a good day, the most glorious color. Quite different from the woods that back our house. The cloud variations intrigue me too. Watching the weather move is awesome. Makes me feel small and very insignificant.

I am starting to think about the unfinished portraits lying around in the studio. My plan is to take them on when I get home. All the walking on cement, tile, miles of hallways and then on the sand has done wonders for my recuperation. Also, I think I'll take a life drawing class. I like Jean's paintings (sidebar). I might not have drawn so much on this trip, but I have had time to plan.

    1. I'm enjoying the change of scene sun or rain. My knee has made an excellent recovery and has definitely gained stamina. Standing at the easel should be more tolerable for longer periods.
