Little Head #3--Technically

Little Head Practice #3--Technically

It's really number 2 if you count how many canvases I've used. But, I worked on number one for two quicky sessions, so this is number three.  This is JD too--but he's not really himself.  Maybe tomorrow? Probably not; I'll move on.  The position of his head in the photo I used is very different than the position of his head in the larger canvas I'm doing. He looks like a different boy.  The change threw me a bit.  But I am getting the practice I need with oils and gestural painting through this little exercise of little heads done quickly.  This was a half hour session with a lot of superletives muttered and a few thumb smears.  I should have stopped at twenty minutes, but time does fly when you're having fun.

  1. Practice really does make perfect. I have such a difficult time practicing anything- but it is so necessary to making progress in form and technique.
Hope you get your knee straightened out soon. I agree about it taking years to learn "I don't know". Some folks never reach that level of maturity.
I never realized until I got fifty, that maturing socially and emotionally is an ongoing ordeal. We really do get wiser as we get older. Ideally anyway.

    1. Practice. Practice. Practice. Isn't it all practice? These little heads should have been going on since I chose portraiture as a focus--ESPECIALLY being
a novice with oils, the genre, alla prima and the gestural style. So practice. Practice. I'll be a "Practicing Artist," an artist in practice, a doctor of portraiture. :-))

My knee is a go for September 10th. I'm scheduled for a MAKOplasty, a half knee replacement, which means the cartilage only will be replaced. Everything else is fine in there; they saw that when they did the arthroscopy last January. The seventeenth of August I'm having a pre-op CT scan and
they will do the blood work. And I'm set to go. IF THAT GAL WILL MAIL THE PACKET with the blood script; the hospital got the script for the CT. . If I don't get it today, I'm going over to the doc's office in the flesh. That script in my hand, I'm ready. By Septemer 24th I expect to be mobile and actively
doing my PT stretches and muscle building exercises. That's the scoop.

  2. Wow, you have been busy. I am so impressed with your practise heads. First, because I can never bother to do such a thing and second because each one has captured JD, to a greater or lesser degree, but he's definitely there. And, thirdly, because you don't mess about, do you?

    1. Well, it finally dawned on me that I'm actually a beginner when it comes to painting in oils--and in painting portraits. I'm fine with charcoal and pencil--drawing materials--a novice with oils. I do just fine when I use the grid system and carefully draw in the figure, but I used to paint with oils best when I blocked out the figure alla prima. That's where I'd like to go. As far as JD, I worked on him again today, because I did get close, but not cigar. Then I thought what for? It's a practice head; I'm training my eye/hand for accuracy. Get on with it.

  3. Such a good idea to paint the small "throw-aways"; gaining skill with oils, terrific.

    1. I need it. I haven't paid my dues. A few thousands heads should cover the debt!
