Saturday Afternoon

Saturday Spring, photograph by Linda W. Roth
Saturday afternoon, Spring arrived at our house. The sun stole into our yard and coaxed us out to garden. We cut back the Spirea to insure a glorious hedge of large magenta blooms come June. We cut down dead Chrysanthemum twigs and laid them atop the young plants pushing up through the ground cover. With temperatures still unpredictable, they still needed protection.  The dirt under my nails looked glamorous. The sun on my back felt wonderfully warm. Sweeping the walk beat the hell out of walking the treadmill.

I took this photograph  with my Nikon Coolpix L125, as the sun was starting to go down later in the day. I zoomed out towards the lake from a second floor window. The burgundy buds on the trees, the blue of the melting ice on the lake and the apricot strip of the far shore caught my fancy--the burgeoning of Spring energized . This will not be a reference photograph. It stands on its own. It is not color enhanced. It is cropped.

  1. Lovely photo, it feel like spring to me, but on the other hand I thought spring came here 4 days ago. Then a cold front came and it is colder than ever. I hope it will end in a few days like they say and that spring will finally get here.

    Happy painting

    1. The reality is: March winds doth blow and we shall have snow. What will poor Robin do then? He'll sleep in the barn to keep himself warm and tuck his head under his wing, poor thing. That's why last Saturday was such a joy and why I grabbed my camera before the light faded from sight for who knows how long? We had gray skies and flurries today.

  2. What a lovely photo - as you welcome spring,we have the first signs that Autumn is almost here. It's darker when I wake and the air I little crisper, such a relief after the intense heat of summer in Australia. Funny - I look at pictures of snow with something bordering on envy!

    1. Thanks Carol. It pays to keep a camera within easy reach. You don't have snow in Australia in the winter months?

    2. Not where I live in Brisbane, Queensland. Parts of New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania get some snow - but generally most areas are snow-free.

  4. We are starting to see a little evidence that Spring is on the way, then we get a few days revisitation by Winter. Surely it can't be far away, light, colour and new growth. Can't wait.

    1. We are all straining at the bit Mick. Any sign lifts my spirits. I don't know what bit me this winter, but I have been suffering from the dark days and gray skies. They turned me off--which isn't surprising. I was born in the year of the snake and everybody knows snakes hibernate in cold weather as they should. :-))

    1. For a minute... Bill cook, a fellow blogger, a gifted art director and illustrator, an artist with spiritual callings, told me about it. It's fairly inexpensive. Takes good shots, has a zoom lens, can do macro, is easy to handle, and best of all operates with four AA batteries. I have enjoyed using it.

I'm still not back to painting yet, but I'm feeling stirrings of desire. One day working on a plein air landscape would do the trick. --Maybe I'll get a swift kick at the workshop that's coming up in the next two weeks? I had a little set back with regards to business promotions: my personalized note cards came in wrong. Instead of being folded cards, they were just two sided. I've been handing them out as bookmarks so as not to put the, to waste.

  8. Nice to see you returning to yourself, Linda. Wonderful photograph to raise our spirits. Spring almost here ... meanwhile back on the ranch: a week of blizzards here and the coldest March in 30 years.. but do I care? Too right I do :0)!

    1. I'm so sorry John. I woke up to a light dusting of the stuff this morning, but at least the temps are warming and it doesn't stay around long. I did buy myself a gift for next year's gloom: a SAD lamp. Enough of these winter blues.

    1. It was a glorious afternoon--but we're not through yet--not till the middle of April. For the first time in weeks, I feel like painting this afternoon. I wonder if I remember how? I'm on my way to visit. I've been very neglectful these last weeks my nose has been buried in books. I'm sorry.

  10. I really hope you have more inspiring weather. The winter megrims have been awful this year!
I just read your note on "Spots". You made me smile, and feel good. I want to thank you for that, Linda!
