CYL People in The Flesh


Work in Progress: Banana Cream Pie, 30: x 10", acrylic

We followed a UPS truck moving slowly down our street. He was looking for an address. I was hoping it was mine and all the paint I ordered last weekend would be on my doorstep in moments. But he stopped short of my house. Yellow Cadmium Light would not be on my palette during my afternoon session. Shite. 

So I carried on without it incorporating Naples Yellow in the dots and dabs and then moving on to analyze the colors of chocolate under the fluorescent light of a display case. Cool.

 I still haven't gone to Michael's to get a canvas for JD--I still haven't heard a word from the art association I joined in order to take the gestural portraiture workshop, which begins on August 13th. Half of me wants it to be a go; the less confident other half wants it to be canceled--well actually, three quarters wants it to be a go and only a quarter wants it to be cancelled. I'd like to size the place up with regards to its value in my life. You all are great, but some talented people in the flesh, who share my interest would be a big plus.

  1. I know the feeling! I was thrilled to get my paint order from Dan Smith last week, but that is rural life for you.

    This is shaping up so well! I am delightfully carried - hurry up and finish it!

    1. It should be done. I've been dawdling for quite a while, while exploring oils and figurative drawing/painting. I'm into it now though. Thursday or Friday the paint will come. I'll doing whatever I can till then including starting the third panel. There's no CYL in that one.

    I think that will happen at the right time.
    Something new can bring a pleasant change,before the autumn!

    1. Thanks Rita. It's a go. I'm hoping I do enjoy the art association. Decades ago I did not. There was a "Good Ole Gal" thing going on there that excluded newcomers--not exactly a good way to build membership and the coffers. Hopefully, they've wised up.

    1. The workshop is on on my calendar. I just hope it's on on theirs Judy. Chocolate does require some interesting mixing on the palette.

  5. Well, I can't help you with the Yellow Cadmium, but the pies looking promising, looking forward to see the finished painting.
    I don't do all the challenges out there, only the ones that interest me. The nice thing is that it takes me outside my comfort zone and sometimes I find new subjects to paint.

    1. Challenges are sort of like taking a workshop to broaden your vista without instruction or critiques? Sounds like a good way to spend the day. Your rose up close and personal was very nice. I think they are also an excellent way to attract viewers to the challenger's blog.

      I figure the paint should be here tomorrow or Friday? I think I'll track it--or better yet, just run out and buy a small tube? I use Golden acrylics in the 8 oz. jars and then mix them more liquid in tiny food storage containers. I looked at the liquid line and they wanted too much money for saving me the trouble, which isn't all that troublesome.

  6. The workshop sounds really interesting! I always take something away from those... some new technique, or an idea that came to me as I was sitting there. You'll enjoy it! I like this painting very much! I like that you saw these goodies and felt like painting them! I do that all the time!

    1. Thanks Katherine. Is this comment deja vue? The workshop as far as I know is a go. I will push myself out the door at an ungodly early hour and put in the time. I've worried about lunch. I don't like to pack lunch; I like to go out for lunch, a change of scene to lighten the intensity.

  7. Right, I'll have the 2 in the middle-even without Yellow Cadmioum-and the chocolate. Yes, all of it!! Yam, Linda!!!
    About the workshop, I never had one and to keep the place sized up I think it would be the whole of me intimidated and few of my fingers would be dancing out of the thrill of expectation.

    1. Me too. I've only done classes--and those were decades ago. I'm most concerned about the supply list and how I'm going to manage them up the hill from the parking lot, (I'm a big worrier about how I will get from here to there). I'll look into it next Tuesday.

    1. Thanks Eva. The chocolate cake is new news. The cupcakes are old news. Now I'm trying to blen the two so they look like a pair that was done at the same time. That means there's probably another week further down the road when I balance all three panels. I tend to complicate things.

  9. Ah, Linda - even without cad yellow light, this is amazingly edible! Really well done and delectable to my senses. The subject matter reminds me of Wayne Thiebaud but the execution is all yours. Bravo!
    Portrait workshops are exhilarating, exhausting, hard work and well worth the effort. I hope yours comes through - I think you will love it.

    1. I don't know why just Wayne Thiebaud and myself feel pastries are every bit as beautiful as a bowl of fruits--or flowers for that matter.

      I am expecting to be working very hard those four intense (six and a half hour) days. I'm bound to pick up something OR throw my hands up defeated.

  11. The workshop sounds good. I came away from a workshop-type experience several years ago with more knowledge than I could immediately apply, but over time--lots of it--I started to incorporate the lessons in my work.

    1. The woman is very well known and able. She comes from an extremely able family. Her dad was a prime portraiture artist. I'm really looking forward to it--have actually been waiting all summer for it, to the poin, I stopped working on my portrait of my boys and starting my portrait of JD.
