Twenty Minutes With Mom and Graphite

Mom in her sixties, A study in with graphite
Blocked out of my studio by sleeping loved ones, I turned to graphite for my morning fix. I dug out
Mom, from the archives, a bit older and more how I remember her. No hard/soft leads were used, just a graphite stick and my trusted, beloved knead eraser. Everybody should have several lying around the house.
Great finger strengthening doing the cleaning knead.

The following are first drawings done on the iPad by  Erin and JD. Jd didn't get as much time as Erin, so his is just an initial feel-it-out. Erin took to it like a kid. She'll be teaching me somethings before she leaves. No fear of touching and probing runs through her veins.

Two minute IPad exploration by JD Roth,
Title: Flying angry Poptart (for not getting
his fair share of time with the iPad).

Thirty minute IPad exploration by Erin Bess,
Title: Butterfly with polka-dots. The artist is famouse
for her butterfly paintings.

  1. Fun to see everyone's work this morning...yours and the youngsters. It's great how we see expression in your portrait of your Mom ...and you did it in such a short time! Excellent work from all. :)

    1. Mine was early this morning, Erin's and JD's iPad tutorial was late last night, so late JD didn't really have a chance to get into it. I thought his comment "flying angry poptart" expressed his dislike of his sister hogging the device. Sweet. My title might not have been that sweet, might even have been a bit terse.

  2. Linda, I lOVE the graphite study of your mom. Glad you got your artistic fix in there. And you're right; Erin does have a good feel for the iPad. It's good to see you all having some good art time together. :)

    1. Thank you.I'm glad I had stashed some pencil drawing equipment where I could get it without disturbing people's sleep. Today, I'll snatch such charcoal out of the bar drawing cabinet. My lower level has been taken over.

    1. Me too. Today, piano lessons, BBQ shopping (would you believe I don't own one) and a boat or other swim devices. The lake is open, a cozy-for-the-kids 74 degrees. For me, I like 84. Aint going to happen till July. I'll just do my scream jump scream thing. Charming for a woman my age.

    1. Poor kid being bullied by his sister who dominated the device. Not to worry, he got his time in. Thanks Michael. I haven't used a graphite stick in years. I had a little trepidation, but not for long. It was like riding a bike.

    1. Thanks Mick. Your painting of that interior keeps grabbing my eye. I really love how you caught the period of the furniture and used spot of color to move the eye through the scene. Brilliant.

    1. I'm sorry to hear about Pat. "A bit scary" is scary. I'm glad she's home and hope everything is fine.

Speaking of scary. I nearly drown today. I'll be blogging about that for sure, but I'm still a bit shaky and now I'm upset that I didn't get any photographs. My son saved me. He does love me. I was being a smart ass--still thought I was thirty something.
