Today's Finest

The four hour challenge Sweet Choices #2 is finished. I went as far as I could go and enough is enough. I learned all I'm going to learn from this one. Time to move on. The next painting will be my finest.

The whole painting session, I kept thinking about my grandson Zac. His mom gave him a long time out once for not rinsing his brush between dips into the paint pots at a pottery painting class at the hotel where we were staying. The leader (i.e.pottery vender) banished him. He was six years old. My daughter in-law confined him to the lounge next to mine for half an hour. He sulked the whole time. I'm not six, but I dipped without rinsing a lot while painting this picture. What Zac needed wasn't a time out; he needed his own paint pots.

My boys used to taint the paint. At first I tried to get them to rinse between colors, but then I decided what better way to learn how to make gray?

  7. Rich, colorful, brilliant, interesting everywhere you look - beautifully done! Re Zac - wow. I guess that's how painters are made from a young age, but that's tough!

  8. I switched from oils to acrylics years ago Evelyn. I couldn't live with the fumes, hated the difficulties of cleaning up and if it got on your clothes, there was no chance of removing the stain. But I still approach painting like I'm using oils--draw in with washes, dark to light, which suits my lifetime of nearsightedness. The nice part of acrylics is it does make for a nice under-painting that you can still finish in oils. I choose to put on a final coat of semi gloss varnish--the same stuff I used for oils. Both mediums have disadvantages with regards to drying times--one's too slow; one's too fast etc.-- and I try to stay away from complicating the painting table with a lot of retardants and glazing mediums. I like keeping the process as simple and as direct as possible.

I haven't left a comment yet, but if you're reading this, I think that second paintings for your sketch book project is fantastic. It caught my eye immediately scrolling down my page. You are very good Evelyn.

  9. Victor, You know what's yummy? Potato Chips and Trail Mix and pistachio nut--salty things. I would paint those, but I can't allow myself to bring them into the house. You kept telling me to stop...did I carry this one too far? It's holding up so far on my observation wall. I'm going to sign (off) on it. I have another 3/4" stretched canvas to dip in chocolate.

  10. Wasn't that something Dan. I felt so much compassion for the kid that day. Naturally, I didn't think he did anything that I wouldn't have done and am still doing. Mixed colors are the glue of pure colors and Zac sensed it at such an early age. Brilliant.

Your ceiling painting is brilliant too. You got me looking at ceilings with a fresh eye. --But I'm going to push this pastry thing the rest of the year and see where I'm going with it. Will start another today. I'm on a chocolate roll--I believe that's called an eclair and I also have some tequila that's interesting me...hmmmm. All vices.

  11. I looked at this earlier and it was really fine. I then went to a cafe and bought: 2 chocolate croissant bread puddings, 2 lemon tarts, 1 slice of sweet potato pie, 2 bacon/cheddar muffins, a jar of local honey, a large peanut butter cookie, and granola/almond/raisin mix. I ate the pie; the other desserts will go into the freezer or be shared with neighbors.

    I still taint the paint.

  12. LOL Hallie. Me too--and I spill it all over myself to boot. It was a darn good thing my DIL wasn't looking over my shoulder when I was painting this one (or any other one for that matter), I'd be confined to my lounge indefinitely.
