Out of Touch

I've recovered enough to give drawing a try. I chose to copy Dame Ethel Smyth, a charcoal by John Singer Sargent in 1901. I did it in pencil. I did a lousy job--too heavy handed too fast. But it is a step in the right direction, so I'm pleased. I'll have another go at it, later with a clearer head and a graphite stick with better results. The best results I got from this try, was I had the energy to get up and gather my pencil supplies. Over the last three days, I couldn't sit up much less draw. I was out of touch completely. Now, just slightly.

    1. Thanks. The drawing is okay considering how upset I am over the length of time it has taken to come out of that fog? Yes, I didn't feel like combing through my own photos for something. Sargent is always good.

  3. Get better soon, Linda. I like the drawing, and think I'd like to try Sergent sometime, too.

    1. Thanks Casey. JSS is fascinating to copy. Charcoal is the medium. Pencil can't give you the subtle shadings that charcoal does. This drawing and others are in a small paperback book: John Singer Sargent's Charcoal Drawings. I've copied quite a few.

  6. Hi Linda, is nice to see you are feeling better and that you have started painting again. I like this version of a portrait of JSS, but I like even more the "Wildfire" of the previous post. Really beautiful. Take care!

    1. Thanks Tito. JSS is always a good way to get back into drawing, but Wildfire is a real joy. It's close to finished. Just needs a bit of taming down.

    1. Thanks Sharon, I do feel in control with a pencil or charcoal in my hand. This was a tricky head--the angle, her mouth. I was at a disadvantage. I neglected to put my eraser templates, important drawing tools, in my pencil chest. I'll have to round those up. On the bright side, I did it.

    1. I know, it's unbelievable. The Spray bottle/NeilMed Sinus Rinse routine works along with Flonase and a Nasogel swab to keep the sinus membranes clean and moist. You can do it twice a day said my sinus doc. I also think I'm adding our humidifier to our bedroom. The mornings are the worst with dry nose and sinus headache. It takes me an hour or so to feel human. I do wish I had a steam shower. --Maybe I'll get one of those steamers I used to have for giving myself a facial when I was caught up in all that chicky stuff?

I went to physical therapy today. Pushed myself out the door into fog and icy slush to see if I was just suffering from being in the house so long. I feel better. My knee is great--but the truth will be told when I can walk on uneven terrain down to the lake this summer and ride my bike around our hilly neighborhood. Sometimes I think, all my complaining is just me rebelling against my aging body parts and totally not accepting what happens to them. I've never been one that goes easily with the flow. :-))
